The Rock NSW

On our way to the next stop, a town called The Rock we passed through and decided to stop for a while at Lockhart. A beautiful  picture post-card town also known as The Veranda Town. Lockhart was settled in the the 1850's originally known as Greens Gunyah and renamed Lockhart in 1887.This  truly is the town of sculptures all made from recycled metal. In the CWA Park there is "Rounding up the Sheep", Galahs, Emus and their Chicks and Kookaburras to just name a few.

At the rear of this park is a water tower that has a magnificent painted mural depicting a cascading waterfall surrounded by many of the unique native flora and fauna found in the district. Painted by Scott Nagy and Janne Birkner it reflects the importance of one of the regions most vital assests - water. Some of the animals and bird life of the mural are Rosellas, Willy Wagtails, Magpies as well as soaring Brolgas at the very top, marsupials also feature with Possoms, Echidnas, and some Kangaroos lazing under a shady tree. Another sculpture is on the median strip dividing the road into town and is of a horse drawn dray.

After an hour wandering around Lockhart we were mobile again and pulled into The Rock about another hour after that, set up camp and caught up with the boring day to day stuff. We took a stroll through town about 2 o'clock in the arvo and hunted down the only pub in town, only to find it didn't open till much later. What a let down!
On Friday we packed some lunch, munchies and water and went to Yerong National Park and did the walk up to the top of "The Rock" which the town is named after. This was supposed to be a three hour round trek, it took us four hours with an additional half hour lunch break at the top. What an amazing view, we literally felt like we were on top of the world, you could see for miles in any direction.

Feeling Stuffed after our climb up and down the summit we slowly walked the short distance to The Rock Return Service Men and Bowling Club. We had a feed, a yak and a couple of beers with some of the locals and slowly headed back home.
The next day before we hit the road to the next camp we went down Memorial Avenue and checked out the Return Services Memorial, very nicely done with the Air force, Navy and Army all represented. They had added a four dimensional sculpture for the anniversary of The First World War.
