Nyngan NSW

On the road again the next day and looking to call Nyngan our home for a couple of days We found the Nyngan Weir free camp and met a lovely couple who had been camping there for two days and loved it. That afternoon another happy hour was had and we were soon joined by a couple of late comers, and you guessed it a great time was had by all.

Next day we said goodbye to our new drinking partners and went and saw the sights that Nyngan had to offer. The town of Nyngan is situated on the Bogan River and the area was explored by Thomas Mitchell in 1835. Not long after squatters set up camp and Nyngan soon became a small, then a bigger town. The train no longer runs through the town and the station was like many others turned into a Museum and for $3.00 a head you can take as long as you like to go through the many display's and artifacts from the distant and not so distant past.

There is a helicopter on display out the front of the museum and was used to rescue and transport goods and people during the devastating flood of 1990. Evacuated residents were taken to safety from the railway station to Dubbo by a combined fleet of Air Force, TV News and private helicopters. The total damage amounted to $50,000,000.

We also went for a drive out to the Cemetery, it is here that they have a special section for the  Chinese immigrants that came over during the gold rush days. The site is heritage listed as just one of the few Chinese Cemeteries in the area. The graves date from 1913 to 1924. The site also has a Chinese Burner so the family and friends could burn offerings to the departed in the afterlife.

Changing the subject to something totally different and not so serious, I had told you that Nyngan is on the Bogan River and is part of the Bogan Shire, to have some fun they commission a giant metal cut out of the "Big Bogan" . He comes complete with his over sized esky and fishing rod. On his left arm is a tattoo of the Southern Cross and he is giving the thumbs up to the fish he just caught. Small town humour is what it is all about!
