Renmark SA

From Waikerie to Renmark right on the River Murray, according to the flood marker at the jetty the 1956 flood was the highest ever, due to higher than average rainfall in Western Queensland the water flowed down through the Darling Basin and flooded many towns along the Murray River in NSW, Vic and SA. The flood was and still is considered the biggest flood in recorded history and was described as "the greatest catastrophe in South Australia's history.

The Renmark Hotel was established in 1897 and has all the hallmarks of the Art Deco period. This hotel was the first Community Owned Hotel in the British Empire and is still operating as a community hotel.

The nearby town of Paringa has the Number 5 Lock of the Murray built in the 1920's. The lock is part of the chain of locks along the River Murray and now has a lovely park with a barge named the "Bunyip" on display. Paringa also has it's version of the Black Stump, this is one of eleven throughout Australia.

We camped at Plush's Bend at Renmark and had the ute booked in for a service the next day. We dropped off the ute and hung around Renmark for a few hours when we decided to walk back to camp, it was only 6km's, no worries can do! We made it and received a phone call from Chris the guy who manages the Repco joint we went through for the service, the ute needed some parts replaced and wouldn't be ready til later this afternoon. John got bored and decided to walk back into town I think he's nuts but that's just my opinion. The ute was finally ready to be picked up but there was a but. as part of the service we had four new tyres between the ute and the van and wanted them swapped over and put on the truck as we had done about 50,000 km's and they were pretty worn down. We took the ones of the back of the van and loaded them on to the truck, strapped them into place. With the tyre swap done and the wheels placed back on the tray of the ute the young bloke took it for a test drive and somehow managed to loose one of the van wheels off the back. Long story short, with a lot apologies Chris said he would replace it with a second hand rim and new tyre. Unable to find one locally he got lucky in Adelaide and would pick it up and sort it out on the weekend. When we picked it up he told us that the young guy was going to get at least two weeks of shit jobs. On the upside we did get to see more of South Australia than we intended to.
