G'Day to Deniliquin, locally known as Deni. We found our way to another great free camp on the Edward River. Plenty of spots to choose from but not to many with great views and uninterrupted sun. As usual set up camp and went into town. We discovered the town was named after an Aboriginal famed for his wrestling prowess, Denilakoon, well that's the story anyway.
We went to the Tourist Info which is also the museum of the local area and culture, Marino sheep breeding and shearing, school life back in the day. Deni became an important river crossing for stock route and the gold rush at the time, the first bridge across the Edward River was built in 1861. Also in 1861 George Hall Peppin and his son's, experienced sheep breeders established a Marino Stud Farm. The brothers developed the Peppin Marino, able to thrive in the drier inland regions. Today up to 70 percent of Marinos in Australia are said to be directly descended from these sheep.
Deni is also famous for the Annual Deni Ute Muster. This iconic annual event has won the most utes in one place consecutively since 1999 and the World Record Count since 2004 for the most people wearing blue singlets, something to be proud of eh!
