Leigh Creek SA

Leigh Creek is our destination today and we have a very easy start to the day as we hadn't unhitched the night before. Since we were passing we stopped at Lake Eyre South the lake is still dry and unless there is more rain up north it will probably stay that way. We did however meet up unexpectedly with Graham and Ruth and there pooches Molly and Clarey taking a stroll down to the lake. We told them that we were headed to Leigh Creek and they told us they were heading there too, with plans to meet up at the caravan park we said our good byes.

There is always something to see or do along the way and this one sort of snuck up on us, it a place called Mutonia Sculpture Park and what caught our eye was a dog sculpture made from the water tanks left behind from the old Ghan railway. Strange but interesting sculptures made from all recycled material, some by local artists some not but a good place for morning tea. Ruth and Graham thought so too as they pulled in behind us.

Another food stop as you gotta have lunch was made at Farina, what was once a thriving community is now a ghost town of ruins. We have put it on the hit list for next time we are in the area because we feel you would need at least two days to properly explore the town.

We managed to get bread at Lyndhurst, topped up the fuel at the Leigh Creek servo and pulled into the van park and was met by our over the top host Peter, made the decision to stay for two night. Ruth and hubby turned up not much later and set up next to us.
Being our Anniversary we went out for tea and invited Graham and Ruth to join us at the Leigh Creek Outback Bar and Grill. We choose this place cause it is the only place to get a feed at night, this made picking a place to go easy. We all had a good night out and it was a fun way to celebrate.

Wednesday arrived and it was back to the mundane and boring to start the day! After doing the washing we hit the road to Aroona Dam Sanctuary. It was the water supply for the town and the coal mine when it was running, now the dam wall is dry and hasn't supplied water for quite some time. The water is a little green but the many turtles we saw didn't seem to mind. The day finished with happy hour with Ruth and Graham.
