Kimba SA

We are back at Port Augusta as it is a half way point to our next stop at Kimba. We restocked the pantry and the grog supply as you do and while in civilisation, John went to the hardware store and picked up the bits to re-attache the cupboard door while I tried to catch up with blog, this seems to be a continuous battle. All jobs have been done, not rushing anything these days.
Monday we are back on the road and heading to a little town called Kimba, when we are in these towns that every second shop front is up for lease we try to spend a few dollars here and there and we did. Getting back to the story, Kimba's claim to fame is the town is exactly half way (as the crow flies) across Australia East to West and we the photo to prove it! Kimba is also known for its painted silo and it looks spectacular. It was painted in September 2017 by Melbourne artist Cam Scale and only took an unbelievable 26 days to do it. The silo depicts a local girl in a wheat field at sunset, the colours are amazing and unless you see it in person you can't get the grandeur of the whole thing. Another tourist attraction here is the big gala he is a little dated now but still does his job well.

We set up camp at the recreation grounds, well set out with enough room for approximately 30 to 40 vans in the section we were in and construction has started on an overflow area.  when we were satisfied with our van we took a drive up to White Knob lookout and saw the sculptures of Edward John Eyre and his indigenous scout.

Day 2 we went for a stroll through town and spent money at the hardware shop, the cafe for morning tea and the butcher shop, country meat just tastes better. We finished the day with an impromptu happy hour with new neighbours Barb and Greg. The camp was packed when we got back, no room for even a small camper van, commonly called a wizz bang due to the noise of the door opening and closing.

Wednesday we felt we needed to get some exercise so we set off on the Roora Reserve Walking Trail. It was an easy walk to do but on a 30 plus degree day not so easy and the fly's were shocking. The trail there and back was 3km's each way. To keep you going there are life sized sculptures of the local wildlife along the trail. The only real live critter we saw was a shingle back lizard John nearly stepped on. We made it to the end and back and as a reward we had dinner at the pub.

Wednesday is Snitty night at the Gateway Hotel and hows this for a draw card, Red a very passionate man that loves his town picked us up at the camp ground in the hotel bus and drives us to the pub with a mini tour of the town and when you are done drops you back to camp after a drive past the silos that are lit up at night, all for a gold coin donation to pay for his time and fuel. Dinner was amazing with a choice of Beef or Chicken Schnitzel, gravy was extra but worth it, served with salad and chips. The meal came out and the Schnitzel was the size of both my hands put together, dripping with mushroom gravy all for $14.00 each, we didn't go home hungry that's for sure. We can see us going back to Kimba in the future, great town, great people who all seem to love there little town and now we do too.
