Arthurton called to us and we came to see. The town was surveyed in 1876 and was named after the South Australian Governor Anthony Musgraves son, the Governor insisted on the name change even after the town had already been named "Kalkabury". Arturtons place in the history books is the Stump Jump Plough was designed and invented by C.H & R.B Smith in 1876.
We stayed at a free camp behind a church and in front of the cemetery. The weather hasn't changed and is still in the low forties. Not long after we set up we were joined by another van, not long after that a couple of backpackers park beside us, just a little too close but what can you do. As it was Friday we took our weekly pilgrimage down to the only open business in town the pub, had a couple of cold ones chatted to the boys at the sporty and headed back. After tea Jan and her hubby from the van came over for a chat and we ended up calling it a night about 11pm, good people, good company.
We could only stay for 24 hours so we hit the road to the slightly bigger town of Bute, pulled into the council run caravan park and plugged in the power and hit the aircon button, called the number on the sign to get the pin number for the loos, it went to voice mail and John left a message to say we were there. The laundry was opened so we took the opportunity to wash the sheets as our little washing machine just cant take the load.
Around the caravan park were metal cut outs showing the progression of farm machinery from horse and hand plough, steam tractor, diesel tractor, rubber tyre, enclosed cabin tractor to duel wheels tractor. in the park they also have metal cutouts of a farmer and his dog rounding up the sheep with the help of a couple of chooks. The local store though small was well stocked, also had basic meals and being so hot we bought two burgers, the lady explained that she was out of burger buns and would have to use long rolls, we said sure its still a burger right? It was a burger with the lot and strangely also included cucumber, a bit dry and difficult to eat but I didn't have to sort out lunch so yeah it was an interesting experience. Maybe cucumber on a burger is a South Australian thing!
Night came still no reply from council, morning came, thank God we had on board facilities, still no reply so we packed up and left. It could have been enjoyable if we could have had access to more than just the laundry, no worries, just didn't pay, there loss!
