Alford SA

Alford is not the smallest town we have visited but it is up there for in numbers for small towns. The population as of the 2016 census was 158. The town was established in 1882 and named after Henry Alford, one of SA's leading police officers. At the time numerous businesses were established including blacksmiths, wheelwrights, machinists, engineers, builders, carters, saddlers and shearers. Sadly these are businesses today are all but a memory.
these days the main crops grown in the district are wheat, barley and lentils as well as peas and other grain crops. Sheep are grazed on stubble between growing seasons.
Where we camped was the site of the Alford Primary School which due to the decline in student numbers, closed in 2004.

Alford had a pub which doubled as the post office until it too closed down and is now a private residence. The town still has a bowling club and wait for it a six hole golf course.
