With waffles and coffee in our tummies we set to get back on the black stuff and headed for Tailem Bend, we made camp at the football grounds. Being Australia Day we headed into town and found the party at the town square where the Rotary and Lions club had combined to put on a great BBQ lunch snags, marinated chicken and all the usual salads. We found a couple of chairs and were entertained by a trio singing all the great Aussie classics. In a strange but true twist the woman taking the money for the lunch was Sue Griffiths, weird eh!
This town is situated on the high cliffs overlooking the Murray River and was original just a railway camp in 1887, but with the railway pushing through a town soon sprung up and is still quite the busy town today. The train station was added in 1913 and is the tourist info centre and model train museum. Next to the train station is a fantastic park for the kids complete with a full size steam train, play equipment, a few multi coloured sheep and a display of 45 animals, birds and reptiles native to the area and mostly made from recycled materials.
About 10k's out of town is The Bend Motorsport Track and it is huge with 7.7 km's of race, drift and drag way tracks on the outside and a small racing museum, coffee shop, bar and restaurant. Still being built is accommodation, caravan and camping facilities a massive car park for cars and buses. When it is completed it will be a worldwide first class facility. This attraction will definitely bring money into the town.
