We are back on the road and headed to Red Cliffs about 10 kms south of Mildura. We pulled into the golf club where for $10.00 a night you can park up the back of the practice fairway, not used very often thank God. The weather wasn't on our side, the rain and wind derailed a lot of our out door enthusiasm for out side activities. Freezing our butts off is not on our fun things to do list.
We went to Mildura to take a look at the wharf's, paddle steamers and house boats in the rain. Drove around town and started back to Red Cliffs home of "Big Lizzie" a massive tractor weighing in at 45 tons. She was named by inventor Frank Bottrill's wife. Trials included the Dreadnought wheels in which additional bearers were attached to the rims to spread the weight. She was designed to clear the land and even the Mallee Tree stumps were no match. In 1920 after the war, men began arriving at Red Cliffs at a rate of 50 a day looking for work to construct channels, clear trees and establish a nursery, or simply settle down some where and start a farm. This was made easier with Lizzie at work. By 1923 three million grape vine cuttings were established to accommodate the new settlement. Red Cliffs is a huge agricultural area as is most of this region from grain crops to wine making, olive oil plantations and citrus trees with each small region having its specialty.
