Longreach QLD

Longreach is famous for the Stockman's Hall of Fame and the birth place of Qantas. Council run Apex Park approximately 5kms out of town, great price stay 5 nights for $15.00 and get an extra 2 nights free. Basic, no power, have to bring your own water but does have toilets. Huge space that quickly filled up with people going to Winton for the opening of the new Matilda Centre.
Booked our tickets for the Stockman,s Hall of Fame museum and day show for the following day and caught up with the mundane stuff.
Woke up early at 5.30am thanks to the people hitching up and taking off to Winton which less than 2hrs away. So off to the musuem we went, the museum is quite big and full of interesting stuff it took us a couple of hours to go through it. The Outback Stockman's Show was great! The guy running things was so entertaining, he was a comedian, a singer and song writer as well as a great stockman. The show went for an hour and never stopped. Well worth the $50.00 per person price tag.
Went for a day trip to a little town that goes by the name of Ilfracombe. Again small but lots to look at with the Machinery Mile as you come into town. This is a display of trucks, farming equipment and machines to make various stuff required to keep the farms going. on this same stretch of road was little museums of times past. There was a bottle display, a weapons  display, and a few rooms set up as an insight into the daily life of the town at the turn of the century. Best of all to keep up the maintenance all they asks is a donation. Feeling thirsty after about an hour of looking we went to the Wellshot pub for a cold one, another place full of history.
Qantas founders museum was our target today and arrived there at 9.30am, mind you it isn't hard to find with a full sized 707 and 747 parked out the front, lots to see and do. So many stories of the original founders and their families as well as the ingenuity used to get things up and running. Qantas have come along way since they started with a second hand Avro bi-plane. Lots of old films and static displays from the vast collection of archives available. One of the highlights was you got to walk through the original hanger/ workshop that is nearly 100 years old.
